Infant Maths Week links to Pafos2017
Our annual Maths Week started on March 6th. This year, the Infants’ Department was busy with projects and activities based on our Book Week theme of “Pafos2017”.
The Reception classes used materials to design lighthouses. They then counted how many windows and stripes they had made. The children had to recognise the shapes that had been used and measured the heights of the lighthouses.
Year 1 had a booklet that was based on Aphrodite’s Rock. They used the mathematical skills taught this year to solve word problems and to add and subtract numbers to 20. They also had to distinguish between 2- and 3-dimensional shapes.
Our Year 2 pupils compared the Tombs of the Kings with the pyramids in Egypt. They used their knowledge of 3D shapes to design pyramids, using sticks. They also solved a riddle, using their times tables, to find the treasure hidden in the pyramid.
The children enjoyed using the interesting local landmarks to enhance their learning.
